Hamilton Sanitary Landfill
Mays Landing, Hamilton, NJ
From waste to watts: a remediated landfill, reengineered to generate solar power for a neighboring school.
Environmental Challenges
The site presented a range of technical and regulatory challenges associated with landfill closure, including waste containment, stormwater management, long-term site stability, and environmental monitoring. Closure activities required the design and implementation of engineered controls capable of minimizing infiltration, reducing the potential for environmental impacts, and supporting long-term stewardship of the property.
Given the site's location within the Pinelands National Reserve, additional environmental evaluations and agency coordination were necessary throughout the permitting and design process. Ecological considerations, including protected wildlife habitat and resource protection measures, were incorporated into the overall closure strategy to ensure compliance with state and regional environmental requirements.
Project Outcome
The closure program established a long-term environmental solution for a former municipal landfill while reducing potential environmental liabilities and protecting surrounding natural resources. Engineered closure measures, stormwater controls, and environmental monitoring programs were implemented to support the site's long-term stability and regulatory compliance.
Through careful planning, technical evaluation, and coordination with regulatory agencies, the project demonstrates how complex landfill closure initiatives can successfully address historic environmental concerns while supporting responsible land management and beneficial future use.
Project Overview
Resource Control Consultants (RCC) provided environmental consulting, investigation, permitting, and closure support for the Hamilton Township Sanitary Landfill in Mays Landing, New Jersey. The former municipal landfill encompassed approximately 40 acres and required a comprehensive closure strategy to address historic waste disposal activities, protect environmental resources, and achieve compliance with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) requirements.
Located within the environmentally sensitive Pinelands region, the project demanded careful planning and coordination to balance landfill closure objectives with the protection of surrounding natural habitats and ecological resources.
