National Park Landfill

400 South Grove Ave, National Park, NJ

A hundred-year-old landfill, remediated and transformed to a native vegetation habitat and solar field for the betterment of the community.

Environmental Challenges

The site required careful evaluation of landfill conditions, waste boundaries, settlement potential, stormwater management requirements, and potential impacts to adjacent surface water resources. Given the site's proximity to Woodbury Creek and Hessian Run, environmental controls were critical to preventing erosion, managing runoff, and protecting sensitive ecological areas throughout the closure process.

In addition to the technical challenges associated with capping and grading a large landfill, the project required coordination with multiple regulatory agencies and compliance with state environmental closure requirements.

Project Outcome

The closure program transformed a dormant landfill into a stabilized and environmentally protective site designed to minimize future environmental liabilities. Engineered cap systems, stormwater controls, and restoration measures were implemented to protect human health and the environment while supporting the property's long-term viability.

The completed project serves as an example of how thoughtful environmental remediation and closure planning can address legacy environmental challenges while creating opportunities for beneficial future use.

Project Overview

Resource Control Consultants (RCC) provided environmental consulting and remediation support for the closure of a former municipal landfill located in National Park, New Jersey. The approximately 50-acre site contained historic landfill materials and presented a range of environmental and engineering challenges associated with long-term waste management, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance.

RCC's role focused on developing and implementing a comprehensive closure strategy designed to minimize environmental risk, protect surrounding natural resources, and position the property for productive future use.

RCC Services

RCC's involvement included:

  • Environmental site investigation and characterization

  • Landfill closure planning and regulatory coordination

  • Evaluation of waste limits and site conditions

  • Environmental permitting support

  • Stormwater management planning

  • Construction oversight and environmental compliance monitoring

  • Long-term site management and stewardship planning
